June First - A Meditation

June tiptoes, sun-kissed, in our lives

Each morning gifts a bright sunrise

But while the weather brings us joy

Much is afoot that hopes destroy…

The Balkans powder keg spreads fear

Is Armageddon nearly here?

Kiev repels sustained attacks;

Sudan’s ceasefire shows more cracks…

The economy, in fits and starts

Upsets world climate apple carts

Power struggles come and go

Confusing social media flow.

Whom to trust? Now that is key

As finance markets seem to be

In a state of flux and doubt;

Is decency on its way out?

The insidious power of Internet

Means livelihoods are under threat;

What is real and what is show?

The future is not ours to know …

R.I.P. Tina Turner (1939-2023)

 Sharecropper’s daughter, Anna Mae*

Leaves us all bereft today

Part Navajo and Cherokee

Her voice and songs blew us away!

She was a “Fool in Love” with Ike

But her duo did not last

Despite four children, things weren’t right;

Her star - as solo artist - bright!

With “River Deep and Mountain High”

She rose, gold-plated in the charts

Her public she’d electrify:

“Proud Mary” of performing arts!

“What’s love got to do…”? She’d sing

Echoing an Angst so real

Her deepest feelings she would wing

She seemed so bold, on even keel…

Tina Turner was “The Voice”

Her stage performances - insane!

Going solo a wise choice

Affording her worldwide acclaim.

 Swiss citizen as age creeps up

At eighty-three her final bow

The shock makes many fans “tear-up”;

What can I say? She was a Wow!

Branching Out!

Time marches on - trees grow more branches

The learning curve their lives enhances

Sap rises from the depths within

And so it is, with kith and kin!

How I admire their happy faces

Determined they are going places!

But, for now, they catch the sun

Watching shadows as they run.

Australia and its great outdoors

Holds suburbia in its claws

Its haunting beauty everywhere;

Its weird fauna makes you stare!

The magic horse on background blue

But the pink hat must come too!

While Thomas, older takes his ease

Against one of these noble trees.

I admire the freedom they enjoy

An enchanted childhood, where the boy

And his cute sister face the lens

And Mummy such great photos sends!

Italian Road Trip 2023

Molehills, stacked-up logs and streams

Endless trucks through Brenner Pass,

Snow-capped firs in fog-light beams

Façades in Innsbruck smart-toned – class!

Austria – picturesque and quaint

Timbered chalets, misty heights;

Alto Adige lacked paint

Po Valley – bathed in eerie light.

Bypassing Parma and Verona

Romance in Tuscan towns of note

Bologna cuisine just a murmur

Lake Trasimeno – dreams afloat.

On bumbling train Perugia-bound

 Past vineyards hugging rolling hills;

Rocca Paolina views astound;

Vannucci’s baroque fountain thrills!

Down further South with cirrus high

Giant cactus, prickly pear

Dull autostrada bids goodbye;

On craggy hillsides, hamlets stare.

Sites Ercolano and Pompeii

Draw tourists to their ruined splendour

Trucks to horse and cart give way;

Vesuvius  - sunset to remember!

L'Abbraccio - the word ’ hug’ delights;

Steep slope -  to gated hideaway

White-knuckle driving on both nights

But a warm welcome – happy stay.

Wan January sun is kind

Hairpin bends on narrow roads

Clifftop dining – a rare find

Help! Our memory bank implodes!

Calabria – scrub-bordered, bare

Where rain clouds soften southern blue

Out-of-town homes need repair

Confusion - street names rare and few!

Down windy lanes to rugged coast

Past donkeys bearing concrete blocks

Wild goat by roadside, van with post

Rock-hewn tunnels, viewing spots.

Apartments overlook ravines

Balconies with washing lines

Amalfi with famed postcard scenes

Vertiginous slopes with vines.

Sunday pastries, outside bar

Where bikes fart loudly, swerving past

San Giovanni’s ferryport not far

Sicily in sight – at last!

Strait of Messina – millpond blue

Car locked; lounge lizards on the deck;

Then madcap traffic – what is new?

Tricky driving – nerves a wreck!

Sicilian craggy rocks – no trees

Truck-free but motorbikes and trash

Littered lay-bys – ugly frieze

Dilapidated paint – no cash!

Breakfast in the sun – a treat

Greek temples beckon, car park free!

Perched Agrigento – tough on feet

Amazing views – Tyrrhenian Sea.

  Avola and Trapani meet

Our expectations – quaint and old

Segesta amphitheatre – Greek

And Syracuse’s fortress – bold.

Idyllic Taormina streets

Etna lost in mist and cloud

Where Greek and Roman theatre greets

Almost daily a keen crowd.

To Erice – white-knuckled drive

In hot weather a tough climb!

How can these crumbling towns still thrive?

Ancient archway old as time …

Letojanni – seafront restaurants closed

But B&B up flight of stairs

No pavements, fruit stalls overflow

‘Madonna del Porto’  still stares.

Upward from Messina Strait

Paestum’s Grecian city sprawls

Demeter restaurant a delight

Dining near those ancient walls!

Abandoned beaches - tourists sparse

Tolls, long autostrada days

Suburbia comes upon us fast

Arezzo looms in winter haze.

Rome and Florence far behind

Marghera – Venice within sight

The Doge’s Palace bold, sublime

The magic of canals at night.

Padova where students roam

In narrow streets and friendly squares

Impressive Duomo in grey stone

Ancient gateway, towered stairs.

Then, snow-topped Alps quite winter-numb

Solar panels, brazen vines

Mountain lakes in Tyrol sun

Baroque churches, solemn chimes.

German Autobahns fast-tracked

Never-ending trucks and cars

Tiredness peak as we drive back

Arrive in Brussels – under stars!

Into the Abyss?

Too much rain or lasting drought:

What is the climate all about?

Disasters, natural or man-made

Blight our lives in each decade.

Is there a pattern we can’t see

An unexplained reality?

We search the archives and conclude

That much is still misunderstood.

How Nature copes, we do not know

But it adapts to ebb and flow

The life force turns green every spring

Revitalising everything.

But Man ignores these vital signs

His greed for power undermines

The Planet’s plea to stay in step

What Nation can these flaws deflect?

For eons we have lived unscathed

But the way to Hell is paved

With promises to mend our ways;

Will we sink beneath the waves?

A Right Royal Occasion!

The awaited pageant did take place

Vast crowds awaited the slow pace

Of golden carriage down the Mall

Aerial cameras captured all.

Prancing horses on parade

Bold royal livery displayed

Umbrellas bobbing in profusion

Bright and finely-tuned collusion.

The Press were out there in great force

Protesters lined the route of course

Multi-faiths were celebrated

The ceremony syncopated.

Celebs and not-famous faces

Proudly took their Abbey places.

Glimpses of rare royals were seen;

Screens revealed crowned king and queen!

A sea change for this island nation

Now multi-cultural equation

Where past and present intertwine

Historic moment caught on-line …

Pause - for Thought!

We expect so much from on-line mail

Such avalanches overwhelm;

Time was when letters, now called “snail”

Kept things neat - our hands on helm.

Must we respond – without delay?

Should emails all be saved “in case"?

When a quick delete sends them away;

Do we save trees when we efface?

The tension mounts, we work from home

Isolated behind screens

New on-line colleagues are unknown;

Time off henceforth the 'stuff of dreams'.

No wonder stress is on the rise

‘Burn Out’: a registered  disease

Is this way of working wise?

Give us back our Down Time please!

Is this way life has to be,

With strikes and riots for more pay?

What happened to those breaks for tea?

A.I., maybe, leads us astray!

Friends are Everything!

That life is finite, we all know

Age creeps up; at first, we grow

And benefit from life’s rich flow;

We reach our peak!

But that dratted clock is never still

So, we must grab each passing thrill

Before we too slide down the hill

On stubborn feet.

It starts with memory loss perhaps;

Those aches and pains cause a collapse

What lies in wait are heart attacks …

The outlook’s grim;

So, how to lessen this rough ride?

Tough call to lose weight – who’s not tried?

But with one’s special friends on side

One’s ship stays trim!
