A Watery End!

August bows out, washed in rain

Exhilarating plants again!

Dame Nature brings us to our knees:

Flooded roads - drains blocked with leaves!

Without our brolly, we are lost!

While burnt-out Fagnes*-land counts the cost;

Its forlorn landscape, blackened, bleak

Recalls three heatwaves at their peak…

But uncertainty is Nature’s way,

She keeps us guessing every day!

To politicians we now turn

Ecology – our top concern.

The Army starts recruitment drive

To help dear Belgium to survive;

Budget shortfall, talks intense:

But we need firemen, not Defence…

An Incident on the Track

Let’s take a train to see a friend!

No crowds, no queues, so I expend

A modest sum with “Senior Plus”;

It should take less time than a bus!

“S” class – nothing untoward

Means stopping train; I climb aboard;

Except, and this is nothing new,

"Track incident”  bars our way through!

A crackling Tannoy fills the air...

How long to wait? It isn’t clear…

“Moensberg” station looks deserted

Does this mean we’ll be diverted?

The passengers, and we are few,

Grumble, as all Belgians do!

This is indeed a “stopping” train!

At last, we pick up speed again.

Guess what? We  halt a second time:

More scenic views in bright sunshine!

Irritation, resignation...

Post  Linkebeek, next rural station.

My friend awaits, in bright red dress;

But I alight, so end of stress!

Down leafy lanes we make our way

Amused, perhaps by this delay!

All Records Broken!

Summer this year wears new guises:

Heatwave Number Three surprises!

The Belgian Fens* combust and blaze

Mass exodus in black cloud haze…

We like it warm, but not this hot!

Smart aircon cafés hit the spot;

The start perhaps of a new trend?

Streets deserted – long weekend …

Rain is promised, but I tread

On pavements apt to fry an egg!

Large water bottle is a must;

Even weeds die - dry as dust…

Uccle**– weather records tumble;

Meanwhile, no sign of a rumble;

So, hot and bothered now are we

As the skies remain cloud-free …

Cossies and Mozzies!

I would like to think, on barmy* days

We can relax, but fierce fires rage

French holidays involve high risk

La Gironde** burnt to a crisp!

So far, Belgium has been spared

Though firemen’s strike has got us scared;

Our social services are let down

Though fires still break out in town!

A dip in swimming pool outside

Where we can float or maybe glide

Is just the thing; but I ask where

Such pools exist in open air?

Agreed, this summer the sun shines,

But heatwaves promise sweaty times!

Clothes sales are brisk, ripe fruit abounds

Hence damned mosquitoes do the rounds!

These pesky insects mar our day;

We spray ourselves to keep at bay

Their greedy, irritating bite;

Our ankles targeted at night!

Our Sunny Parade!

 For once, the ‘drache'* fails to appear,

Palace parade with skies quite clear,

Red carpet treatment for our royals;

With loud applause for fireman toils!

I watch the Big Event on screen;

Smart uniforms are to be seen

Bold horse parade before the stand

With TV cameras carefully manned!

Today, this disparate land is one;

We’re ALL Belgians in bright sun!

Tricolour flags flap on tall poles

United up-front with brave goals!

Just on this one day in the year?

Perhaps rose-tinted specs I wear …

No matter - I am proud to be

Multi-cultural – and free!

Doormat Delight!

How to keep in touch when far apart?

My two cute loves who warm my heart

Live, as they say, a world away

When summer’s here, their skies are grey…

There’s Internet and Facebook pages

But we haven’t talked for ages …

So, Auntie tries to bridge the gap

By sending postcards to doormat!

A tad old-fashioned, but this brings

Happiness to share such things;

My day trip to the Belgian coast

Provides marine views which I post!

Long walks on Aussie beach are cool

But there are no ships as a rule

So, Isabella holds my hand

While Thomas digs toes in the sand!

Snail mail of course will take its time

But this personal touch is mine;

When some scenic mail arrives

It comes, I hope, as fun surprise!

Both now read and relish learning;

And nothing beats a good page-turning!

And so, I strive with pen and ink

To forge with them my Belgian link!

For Marco and Jacky!

July exudes a burning glow

Heat 'off the charts' means life is slow

I dine in style with a dear friend;

Quaff Adam's Ale - survival trend!

Umbrella-ed patio offers shade

But oven-heat leaves blondes dismayed;

Meanwhile, two dogs for whom she cares

Laze inside with soulful stares!

Mind you, this twosome at my feet

Is aroused when thrown a treat!

With both her neighbours far away,

My friend walks them every day!

In normal chill and summer storm

Their furry haloes keep them warm.

But lacking natural ‘aircon’ flow,

Today, their fur coats are ‘de trop’!

Our drowsiness – brought on by wine?

Quick - ice cream parfait just-in-time!

With World Cup matches played at night,

Wimbledon on screen seems right!

Terrier Marco naps on rug;

While jealous Jacky claims a hug;

Peace, perfect peace – no hectic rush

Dog Days enjoyed by four of us!

A Devilishly Good Game!

OK, I get it - the world’s gaze,

Focused through this summer haze,

Was firmly fixed upon ‘The Game’;

Red Devils put U.S. to shame;

Loss of sleep? Cheap price to pay!

How could it end another way?

The Red Card* fiasco stoked the fire ...

Predicted consequences – dire!

‘Result’ cartoons now flood the Net;

Black humour reigns as we expect!

Yes, once again, ‘The Mouse has roared’**;

As Belgium four strong goals has scored!

Black-yellow-red flags are flown

As Belgium comes into its own;

What lies ahead we cannot know

But meanwhile, we bathe in pink glow!

All Aglow!

All systems firmly fixed at slow

My “get-up-and-go” lies low

As I consider this day’s chores:

Must I venture out of doors?

And how is it with you ‘out there’?

My well-watered flowers stare

Skywards in a state of bliss;

The sun, for humans, hit or miss…

Farm animals need constant care;

Heavy toil makes tempers flare;

At night - sans aircon - hard to sleep;

Engagements cancelled all this week ...

Is this the shape of things to come?

Has Dante’s feared inferno come

To punish us for wicked ways?

The shock is violent – we're amazed!

‘To keep one’s cool’, not just a phrase

 ‘Hot-headed’ fits the bill these days!

Though storms are forecast end-of-week

This heat dome makes us ‘glow’ a treat!

A Few Hot Thoughts!

Mad heat melts our best intentions

Cools our ardour, heightens tensions

Putting normal life on hold;

Death in forbidden pool is told!

On private land, abandoned quarry*:

Now tempting pool, lad makes a foray

Away from prying eyes to dive;

Failing sadly to survive…

Trains without aircon do not run,

TEC** buses stay home in hot sun,

Schools stop all lessons at midday

Top athletes told they cannot play…

This heat, so longed for, comes at last

But even lizards cannot bask

In temperatures beyond the norm;

This is the full extent of “warm”!

A wave of lethargy ensues;

Sporting fixtures on the news

Speak of cancellations rare;

We have to take stock and beware…

Pre-World Cup 2026

It’s June - the countdown has begun;

Several weeks of football fun;

This year three countries share key dates

As politics has upped the stakes!

Transatlantic flights take place;

Our “Red Devils” * set the pace

They face a choice – but where to go?

To Trump’s U.S. or Mexico?

Canada will also rate

In this new triumvirate

Where 48, not 32

Teams will fight it out anew!

The World Cup sanctions key Prime Time

Ticket sales explode on line

“The game’s afoot!”**; most cannot wait:

Their country’s honour is at stake!

“The Beautiful Game”***, by Pelé dubbed,

Excites the spirit, warms the blood,

Inciting Nations out to play:

Pitch perfect in a world gone grey?

No Sweat!

We swelter, so the mind goes blank;

We mop our brows – neck hairs feel damp

It’s tiring just to lick a stamp

On birthday card;

Big shopping trip you can neglect

Dirty floor? Let dust collect

Some niggly admin tasks? Forget!

Life’s just too hard!

To local pool*? Closed for repairs;

Time to strip off, remove layers

Let bare arms breathe since no one cares ...

We’re in Heat Dome!

Mad exodus – Ostend-on-Sea?

Where strolls along the dyke are free …

But on reflection – this finds me

Relaxed – at home!

Scary - and All that Jazz!

A quiet day – in blazing sun

With city buzz toned down to hum

Where thirsty plants, quite cowed, await

Relief from heat – Vive Watergate!

Such lethargy - perhaps new phase?

We’re so unused to scorching rays;

With many people overheated,

“Get-up-and-go” stores are depleted!

Film festival in Cannes delights

As Belgian films attain new heights;

Miles Davis, jazzman with great flair,

Would have hit his century this year!

 While Bram Stoker’s brainchild: Dracula*

Has lived 130 years – so far!

These disparate facts – caught on the run

Are what make my writing fun!

Day Out in De Panne!

De Panne via the Ostend train

Coastal forecast: wind, no rain;

Graffiti scrawled by railway track

Dingy houses, back-to-back…

At Midi station, eager horde

Climb on, with mobile phones absorbed;

Weeds dominate this railway line

But verdant tendrils hide the grime...

Farms, fields and barns soon past us run

Scenic pleasure in the sun

While cranes and factories display

The Flemish ethic, bold but grey.

Greenhouses, some with broken panes,

Compete with polytunnel lanes;

This flat landscape marked by spires

As in olden times, inspires!

A myriad bridges punctuate

The line, while wind farms now rotate;

A pity - as they spoil the view

But needs for energy accrue!

These robot giants herald Ghent

Where we change, time quickly spent;

Onwards to the coastal plain

A pause in Bruges: tourists de-train!

At last, as North Sea comes in sight

White seagulls greet us with delight;

Ostend in happy face today;

But the Kusttram soon whisks us away!

Through the dunes behold De Panne

An hour’s bumbling ride on tram

Where Leopold first stepped ashore

And Royals lived throughout World War.*

Strolling families on the digue …

Less touristy with time to breathe

We wine and dine in quiet seclusion

Away from stress and in collusion!

A Cheeky Conjecture!

Though Nature often floats my muse

And buoys me up (unlike the News!),

It seems we all must be aware

Of what is going on “out there”.

We need tranquillity and peace

Which never has, alas, long lease

As human folly never dies

But oft invades us in disguise!

“Doom scrolling” is the buzzword new

Describing what we all go through

As daily horrors rock our boat

And cause a tightening of the throat…

Keen journalists are put to task:

How to check their sources fast?

What are we supposed to do

To ascertain what’s fake, what’s true?

Car radios can be put on mute;

News bulletins on radios suit

Those who now forego T.V.

Newsprint? How life used to be!

Has it always been this way?

World events we cannot sway

But, we CAN choose what we read …

So, poetry fulfils a need!

What's in a Date?

Milan, Cortina: Winter Games

Its snowy ambiance proclaims

Bronze medal* for the Belgian Team

A modest effort, it would seem …

Norway, meanwhile tops the polls;

Last TV coverage extols

Great prowess, skill and expertise:

They have the edge in times like these!

Observe elsewhere - the heat is on

It’s four years to the day, upon

Which, other matters topped the news;

I say no more but just leave clues …

Once more, a Sunday meditation:

Penned lightly without hesitation

Recalling what one cannot voice

In terms of dates – a double choice …

Politics - Across the Board!

Is Politics akin to Chess?

Viz: clever moves that may attest

An agenda hidden in plain view;

From Pawn to King is nothing new!

Two steps forward, then a slide

In which direction will they ride?

Is all Black or White? I fear

Shades of grey are ever near.

Anticipating who goes where

Though each starts in allotted square;

Yet,  unexpected moves may bring

A seismic shift – not a bad thing!

Jostling ‘pawns’ form options new

Opposing players may win through

With actions dubious, smart, effete …

Each Nation’s ‘chessboard’ is unique!

Brighton Jetty Sculptures

The Tour Down Under fills sports news;

Clad in Lycra, scenic views

As peddle-pushers pit their skills

Up Adelaide’s amazing hills.

Slight breezes cool – it’s hot outdoors

At Mount Lofty, cyclists pause

One biker “Eddy Merckx” displays:

A touch of Belgium in heat haze!

Meanwhile, amazing artworks stare

On Brighton’s sandy thoroughfare:

Bold dolphin “Snowflake” made me start;

Two yellow blooms – surrealist art?

One feature though, amused me most

Called “feathered cyclists” at this coast:

Gull, Puffin and a Penguin ride

Streamlined, flat out, side by side!

While Sipping Tea

The cuckoo clock chimes in the hall

Dark shadows play on kitchen wall

Children’s voices heard in street

Echoes of excited feet…

Inside, I sip my cup of tea

The radio burbles near to me

My calendar says it’s December

A clean slate – bye, bye, November!

The twelfth month dawns in silver sky

Timidly, the time goes by

While lives burst at the seams with stress;

Many want more, but need less.

In winter darkness, I take stock;

 As peace, desired by all, is not …

Talks drag on, strong hopes expressed

But none with foresight has been blessed …

We’re in the dark, in every sense

France wants to bolster its defence

Some Belgian nuclear plants* will close

How will it all end? Who knows?
