The Joy of Friends

Experience puts us through our paces

Time writes lines upon our faces

Disappointments test our spark

And sorrow burns holes in our heart

But somehow, we all soldier on

Our spirit fights to keep us strong

Hope buoys us up on sunless days

And gifts of happiness amaze.

Material goods don’t hit the spot;

When we pass, we leave the lot!

But precious friends are life’s true joy

As they form bonds time can’t destroy.

Let's Dis-Stress Ourselves!

Time flies when you’re having fun

Or trying hard – to get things done

Days lengthen but free time is short

Interruptions? Pause for thought!

So, you wonder – must I work away

And achieve all tasks – today?

Is this deadline cast in stone

Or can I put it off – by phone?

Relentless I.T. – constant pressure

Weekends fly by without leisure;

Like when we scan the on-line news:

Stressful war “games” don’t enthuse …

Is constant change our daily lot?

More red tape - as like as not

All now seems on nerves to grate;

Bears are right – let’s hibernate!

February 2nd - Shocking News!

One person missing is big news

Police dogs, divers, camera crews …

But when a Turkish earthquake strikes,

Death tolls shoot up to new heights …

Talk of 40,000 I have heard;

 Many in Syria have occurred

A myriad family lives cut short

Harsh scenes of desolation - fraught …

While rescue workers without rest

Harbour hope and do their best

A lucky few come out alive

Though silent masses don’t survive …

At last, free flow of health supplies!

As each exhausted doctor tries

To help all those in dire need;

Field hospitals work at full speed…

Politics can’t be blamed for shakes

The cause is those tectonic plates

Which remind us in a flash once more

That Nature’s power transcends war!

R.I.P. Burt Bacharach (1928-2023)

A Kansas kiddie born, not bred

Who loved New York’s bright lights instead

A gifted pianist who composed

“Magic Moments” –  tapping toes…

Music Director for Marlene

Creator of the “Alfie” theme

Hal David's lyrics soon on board

 A three times Academy award!

Did his four wives hear this refrain:

“I’ll never fall in love again”?

 “Raindrops keep falling on my head”

“Anyone who had a heart” saw red!

“The Look of Love” - mellifluous tones

“What’s New Pussycat?” - Tom Jones

“What the World Needs Now” - Sam Getz

“I say a little Prayer” next.

Launched  Dionne Warwick: “Walk on By”;

“Trains and Boats and Planes” – a high;

Burt Bacharach moved many hearts

Remaining up there in the charts!

His final notes - at Ninety-Four …

How’ere you see it, a fine score;

With easy listening to sublime me …

“Always something there to remind me” …

A Primary Consideration

Another year with shining face!

My not-so-little ones, with grace,

Now pose in front of Mummy’s lens

Smartly dressed, hols at an end.

Poised as to the manor born

School beckons – hence the uniform

The style relaxed and easy care

As classes start in sunny glare.

I wonder what goes through their mind

With challenges of every kind?

Tough subjects which will test their skills;

An outside life with sporting thrills …

Sweet Isabella’s not quite there

 But Thomas now can read with care;

All progress at this age is swift

In no time she will catch the drift!

Though distant, Auntie’s in the loop

Each milestone registered - a scoop!

Proud parents having loves like these

Who bring such joy to family frieze!

Solar Soliloquy

You’ve noticed how our mood’s affected

By the sun? We feel connected

To life, to others and revive,

How good it is to be alive!

Depression, caused by dark and mist

Melts away when we’re sun-kissed;

Nature’s seedlings start to crawl

As shadows lengthen on the wall.

Once the Feast of Candlemas is past

Groundhog Day then follows fast

Winter’s grip becomes less tight

Optimism now burns bright.

Hope, still warmly dressed, appears

She gladdens hearts, love in arrears

Four minutes’ extra sun each day!

Lacklustre cobwebs swept away.

Life isn’t perfect, but we feel

Sun in this crazy world is real

While politics may disappoint

Spring is never out of joint!

Flying High!

Helium balloon in foreign space

Are we in a spying race?

The Cold War froze and died a death

Threat from afar? We hold our breath.

The Press gets wind (forgive the pun)

Surveillance fighters on the run

Montana watches it go by

Under an uncertain sky.

A slow glide drifts it down the coast

Caught in the radar, a bold ghost

With fear of fall-out, it rides high

Almost mocking, in the sky.

But its observers aren’t asleep

Shot down, it plunges in the deep;

Eastern voices make protest

In terms of brinkmanship – a test?

For February Natives!

February – cold yet sweet

Is winter’s last gasp and retreat

Pale shadow of the warmth to come,

A month that’s brief, not blessed with sun.

But let me celebrate in rhyme

Those whose birthdays fall this time

When winter’s mask remains in place

As timid Spring still veils her face ...

Aquarius beckons, full of guile,

Inventive, with seductive smile

As lovers met one May or June

To create your unique tune!

 When love blossoms, souls are one

 And from this miracle, you come;

On centre stage, you play your part

Imbued with a true artist’s heart!

So, those whose natal day’s in Feb

Are blessed with a creative thread,

With new perspectives always key:

Trailblazers you are sure to be!
